(DailyDig.com) – Gunfire broke out among the nearly one thousand attendees during a May Day celebration in Alabama, killing three individuals. Officials reported that about 15 other attendees sustained injuries.
A member of the Investigation Division of Baldwin County, Captain Andre Reid, stated that most of the attendees were young people. He said that there is no word yet regarding the number of arrests made, if at all.
The sheriff’s office in Baldwin County reported that the event, a celebration of the upcoming warm weather of summer, took place in a field on May 11 in Stockton, Alabama. Around 9:30 p.m., an argument disrupted the peaceful celebration, leading to a violent confrontation, prompting the call for deputies. It is believed that one person was the only gunman, though the scene was chaotic, and the investigation is still ongoing.
At least 18 individuals were shot, with three succumbing to their injuries, resulting in their deaths, according to officers on the scene. Officers have not disclosed the identities of the three deceased individuals or those injured.
According to the sheriff’s office, investigations may reveal more than one shooter, despite the assumption that only one shooter caused the injuries and deaths. They are asking the attendees, or anyone with knowledge of the incident, to provide them with information or possibly video of the activity.
An eyewitness to the melee, Douglas Bolden, said that he sheltered underneath his camper as people, many children, were running into the woods for protection. He stated that it sounded as if there were many different locations for gunfire.
Stockton’s population is only about 400, and it is located about 30 miles from Mobile, Alabama.
According to the sheriff’s office, the event was tragic and affected many people in their community. They will work diligently to find the perpetrators and bring a successful conclusion to the case.
