(DailyDig.com) – The United States military said on January 21 that an aerial drone bombed a US facility in Jordan, killing three service personnel and injuring several more.
The incident took place at a U.S. partner facility in northeast Jordan, near the Syrian border, per President Biden. An American official from the Department of Defense reported that the assault occurred at Tower 22, an outpost housing approximately 350 US Army and Air Force troops.
U.S. Central Command, responsible for the oversight of American soldiers in the Middle East, first reported 25 injuries but subsequently verified not fewer than 34. The military official reported that eight injured servicemen were evacuated in stable condition to receive higher-level medical attention.
Prior to the break of the morning, the drone attack occurred when the wounded and deceased soldiers were slumbering in their base quarters.
The Defense Department announced the identities of the three casualties on January 22. They are Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, of Savannah, Georgia, 23; Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, of Waycross, Georgia, 24; and Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, of Carrollton, Georgia, 46.
According to the White House, President Biden was told about the incident and met with senior advisors, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The assault was carried out by extremist terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria that receive funding from Iran, according to the president’s statement. He said that the US will call those guilty to account when and how they want.
As the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, a suicide bomber in Kabul murdered 13 Americans; this recent assault is thought to be the bloodiest attack on American military men since then.
Tensions between the US and Iran’s regional proxies have been rising to dangerous levels in the last few weeks, and the drone attack comes at a time when Israel’s struggle with Hamas in Gaza, which is supported by Iran, might escalate into a wider regional battle.
