(DailyDig.com) – One Berlin official, in the aftermath of the Israel-Gaza conflict, grudgingly suggested during an interview that Jewish citizens of the city disguise their beliefs.
After Hamas crossed into Israeli territory from Gaza on October 7 and launched multiple missiles into Israeli territory, Israel announced war on Hamas. There are verified deaths of a minimum of 1,300 Israelis, along with 29 Americans. Pro-Palestinian rallies and protests have been staged in various U.S. and European locations in support of the assaults.
Commissioner for Integration Güner Balci said that anti-Israeli sentiment has been disregarded by German political authorities for decades. There were those who didn’t see the growing influence of political Islam as a major threat. By disbanding the working group of experts on political Islam, SPD Interior Minister Nancy Fraeser signaled that she did not consider the subject to be a priority.
Balci warned Jewish inhabitants of Neukölln to conceal their beliefs and warned others not to make their Jewish identity obvious for fear of persecution. Even in more peaceful times, those Jews who wore the kippa ran the risk of being abused or spit on. In Neukölln, they erected an Israeli flag in front of City Hall in a show of support, although under police protection.
She went on to say that it disturbs her that this kind of conduct is seen as usual in Germany. Many people who speak Arabic in Neukölln support the terrorists, whereas moderate Muslims hesitate to speak out for fear of being labeled extremists. Officials refuse to even label Hamas as a terrorist group.
After violent anti-Israel people celebrated the murder of Israelis and attacked the police this weekend, Germany has tightened down on pro-Palestinian gatherings. A subsequent ban on further demonstrations throughout the week was issued by the authorities.
Balci suggested preventive measures, although she did emphasize that such initiatives need more money. In addition, she said, she has been called racist as a result of her activism. She said she made the decision to stop giving in to fear. They must speak out now.
