(DailyDig.com) – On November 4, a 14-year-old kid died during a 5K high school race in Florida.
The teen was a freshman at Davie, Florida’s Western High School, and he was running in a Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) drill.
Family members knew the boy as Knox MacEwen, and the Miramar Police Department reported finding him, when they arrived on the scene, in cardiac arrest after the JROTC 5K held at Everglades High School.
At around 9 a.m., rescue workers arrived at the high school and took MacEwen directly to Memorial Miramar, but they were unable to save him. The hospital proclaimed him dead shortly thereafter.
The high school administrator broke the news of his death to students and staff and promised that counselors would be on hand throughout the week to help them cope with their loss.
Principal Jimmy Arrojo of Western High School claimed that a JROTC student was pronounced dead at the hospital that morning. He wanted MacEwen’s family, friends, students, and instructors to know how sorry he was for their loss.
MacEwen’s preacher at the Crossway Church, located in Cooper City, said the boy was loved by a lot of people, which made his death an immense and profound loss. He relayed what MacEwen’s dad had told him about how great his son was a few days before. When his friends think of this adolescent, they see the clever, loving, and kind young man that he was.
A family friend who started a GoFundMe campaign for MacEwen’s loved ones described him as a pillar of the community. His family and friends adored him, and he participated in volunteer work with the youth group at his neighborhood church. He was a beloved son, brother, nephew, grandson, and friend.
The GoFundMe campaign collected over $66,000, which will be given to the family to cover burial costs and give the parents time to mourn. The teen’s mother, Julie, battled cancer last year and went through a tough fight that has left her financially and physically exhausted.
