(DailyDig.com) – Authorities in Uptown Charlotte, NC, reported the arrest of a 19-year-old on various charges following a firearm-related incident that injured five individuals at a New Year’s Eve party in Romare Bearden Park.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), the incident occurred right around 11:30 p.m. on December 31. An individual opened fire on the gathering, resulting in five individuals being wounded.
Authorities reported that detectives used video technology derived from footage taken at the site to identify the suspect. They informed the responding officers of the suspect’s description, who subsequently arrested him.
The CMPD reported on January 1 that Daevion Markeith Crawford was accused of opening fire in the busy park. He faces a single charge of entering armed to terrorize people and five charges of assault with a dangerous weapon intending to kill.
January 2 was Crawford’s first appearance in court. His bail was originally $750,000 but was increased to $1.5 million by the court, which expressed amazement that it hadn’t been greater from the start. January 23 is Crawford’s upcoming court date. He will be obligated to don an ankle monitor upon release if he posts bail.
Leaders in Charlotte are now demanding action.
City Councilman Tariq Bokhari of Charlotte expressed his belief that there is a rationale for them to investigate potential solutions to this issue. With the support of the North Carolina General Assembly, he requested the establishment of a crime-fighting task force this year. He intends to collect information on persistent offenders in order to develop fresh approaches.
The mayor of Charlotte, Vi Lyles, added her opinion, stating that the attack was a tragic event that highlights the need to prioritize public safety. They continue to place a premium on the safety of their residents and guests. They will commit to making their city a welcoming and secure environment for everyone.
According to CMPD, all five victims were hit below their knees, and the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
