(DailyDig.com) – Tiger Woods’s decision to end his 27-year partnership with Nike on January 8 broke the hearts of golf fans everywhere.
Since his professional golf career began in August 1996, Woods has proudly sported Nike swooshes. Together, they achieved 82 victories on the PGA Tour, 15 major championships, and many more triumphs after personal hardships and suffering injuries.
After months of breakup rumors, Woods finally acknowledged the end of his 27-year collaboration with the athletic apparel behemoth.
In a statement, Woods expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to begin a collaboration with a globally recognized and renowned company. Along with the wonderful Nike staff and players he had the honor of working with, Phil Knight. He would like to express his personal gratitude to Phil for his enthusiasm and vision which led to the formation of this collaboration between them and Nike Golf.
Woods, who is 48 years old, did not specify which clothing labels he intended to wear on future occasions in his statement. Since he returned to play in February 2021 after suffering injuries in a vehicle crash outside of Los Angeles, he has been using golf shoes by FootJoy.
After his incredible recovery and attendance at the Masters that year, Woods addressed his shoe decision, stating that his movement was severely restricted. In addition to the plates, screws, and rods in his leg, he needs an alternative that provides him with more stability.
This partnership ends as part of Nike’s plan to reduce spending by $2 billion over the next several years and reduce spending in its golf business. Since 2016, when they ceased production of golf equipment, they have just offered clothes. If Nike were to wind down its golf operation, it would end a four-decade run of producing gear and clothing for the sport.
While Woods has said that he would no longer be wearing Nike, he has promised to compete in at least one event per month in 2024; thus, his future clothing intentions are presently unknown.
