(DailyDig.com) – Recent studies show the typical American family spends over $1,000 monthly on food.
According to the Household Pulse survey conducted by the US Census Bureau, typical American households spend an average of $270 per week on groceries. At $297.72 a week, or $27.51 higher than average for the remaining states, California households spend more on groceries than any of the other 49 states.
Research conducted by HelpAdvisor, which examined data from the Census Bureau’s survey, found the typical American household spends around $270.21 per week on groceries. When you factor in the cost of raising children, that figure jumps to $331.94 per week, or 41% more than the average for homes without children, according to data compiled by HelpAdvisor.
Nevada, a state bordering California, spends around $294.76 per week on groceries, placing its inhabitants second highest in the US. The next three most costly states are Mississippi at $290.64 a week, Washington at $287.67 a week, and Florida at $287.27 a week.
For the lowest average weekly grocery expenditures, the survey indicated that the average weekly food price for Wisconsin is $221.46, which is $76 lower than the average weekly grocery expense for California households.
Based on data compiled by HelpAdvisor, the states of Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, and Indiana have the lowest weekly food expenditures, with families spending less than $240 on average.
The results of the data showed there was a clear relationship between average food expenditure and the degree of education in each household. According to the study, the average weekly expenditure is $320 for individuals without a diploma from high school and $274.96 for those with a diploma or GED from high school. Households with some college or with an associate’s degree have weekly expenditures of $268.19, and weekly grocery expenditures are $258.42 for those with a bachelor’s degree or above.
For a household of four spending $750 per month on groceries, the state in which they live might affect their annual grocery budget by close to $500 per year.
