Rock Singer, Steve Harley, Dead at 73

(DailyDig.com) – Steve Harley, lead singer for Cockney Rebel, a rock band from England, was 73 when he died on March 17. His family reported that he was at home when he died peacefully.

According to his family, he was still touring but had to cancel his shows in the previous months to receive cancer treatment. Their statement revealed that Harley’s family and fans will miss him terribly. They were devastated by the death of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather. They were with him at the time.

They relayed that the woods he loved were filled with the songs of birds, and the home echoed his grandchildren’s laughter. They spoke of his kindness, passion, and generosity in abundance. They asked his fans to allow them to grieve his death with respect and privacy.

The Steve Harley Acoustic Band announced in October of last year that they canceled the January shows to give Harley time to recover from a medical procedure. Then, at Christmas, Harley announced the cancellation of his tour when he revealed the cancer he was fighting.

He stated that the doctors were happy with the treatment he was receiving, but it was very tiring for him. He relayed the fact that he was fighting and was thankful that it hadn’t affected his voice.

Then, in February, his management team reported that he was not able to plan any 2024 concerts. They thanked his fans, who expressed their support, and stated that Harley hopes the next year will be different.

Cockney Rebel rose to fame in London early in the 1970s as they were developing a varied style ranging from progressive rock to pop. Their legendary song, “Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me),” was included in one of the five albums they produced. The albums succeeded in making the UK Albums Chart, with twelve of their singles making the UK Singles Chart.

Survivors include Dorothy, his wife, his two children, Greta and Kerr, and four grandchildren.
