(DailyDig.com) – Two hospitals in Hamas-controlled Gaza were the sites of several mass graves found after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) left the area. In an April 25 announcement, a Palestinian Civil Defense (PCD) official said that the Nasser hospital in Khan Younis was the site of three graves.
According to the official, they recovered 392 bodies, identified 165 of them, and are still examining the remaining ones.
In northern Gaza, the Al Shifa hospital was the site of another mass grave. Ravina Shamdasani, a spokesperson for the UN, said that they are still investigating that site. The statement revealed that a number of bodies were discovered but did not release the total number.
Mohammed Al Mighayyer, an official of the PCD, has called on the UN to investigate the mass graves. He claimed that the bodies of the victims showed signs of torture, gunshot wounds, and some being buried alive. Outside sources have not received independent proof of these claims.
Stephane Dujarric, a UN spokesperson, revealed that they have received a request to investigate but did not state how it will proceed or when the investigation will happen.
The IDF released a statement saying that allegations about their troops burying bodies were untrue. They said that the Palestinians themselves dug one of the graves while they were there over a month ago. This was confirmed by the PCD, who said that the Palestinians buried family members because travel to proper burial sites was not safe.
IDF troops also revealed that their intelligence indicated that Nasser Hospital was housing some of their captured countrymen. In their search for hostages, the IDF stated that they dug up the bodies to identify any of their people. They said they treated the bodies with respectful dignity.
The statement also said that during their operation to locate the hostages, the IDF found nearly 200 Hamas terrorists in Nasser Hospital. They also found that the unused medicine that Israel had previously sent to Gaza for their people being held hostage was never given to them.
