World Top Golfer Charged With Assaulting Police

(DailyDig.com) – The Louisville, Kentucky, Metro Police arrested Scottie Scheffler, the world’s number one golfer, just prior to the start of the PGA Championship second round on May 17. The arrest occurred when he assaulted a police officer.

A witness to the incident placed it at about 5:45 a.m. Earlier, a pedestrian’s accidental death from a bus collision halted traffic heading to the golf course. The second round was then rescheduled from 7:15 a.m. to 8:35 a.m.

Scheffler arrived soon after the traffic accident and attempted to bypass the crash site by driving in the median, even after a police officer ordered him to stop. He eventually stopped, and the police pulled him out of his car, placed him under arrest, and handcuffed him.

According to Steve Romines, Scheffler’s attorney, the arrest was a miscommunication between the police officers. He relayed the golfer’s account of the incident that led to his arrest. He stated that one police unit was handling the accident investigation and another police unit was handling traffic control.

One officer told Scheffler how to travel to the golf course and prepare for the second round of the championship, but the other officer only saw the driver ignore traffic signs to avoid the closure. According to Romines, the arresting officer did not believe that Scheffler was following directions given to him by another officer.

The police department’s statement indicated the closure of all traffic lanes in both directions. According to the report, Scheffler was in the lane heading east when he allegedly moved into the lane heading west to bypass traffic and enter the golf club. An officer attempted to stop Scheffler by relaying directions, but Scheffler refused to obey and continued forward, dragging the officer along the ground.

The report stated that the officer sustained abrasions, swelling, and pain.

Romines spoke with eyewitnesses and watched videos of the incident, stating that the police report was incorrect. The PGA stated that they are cooperating with the police.
