(DailyDig.com) – On July 6, John Cena, a WWE wrestling legend aged 47, announced at a stunning live event, “Money in the Bank,” his retirement after next year’s appearance at the WrestleMania event.
The WWE 16-time world champion showed up unexpectedly and received a warm welcome from the crowd in Toronto, Canada. The cheers and thunderous applause quickly changed to sad boos when he announced that his last year would culminate with his retirement.
He told the crowd that, like the tee shirt he was wearing, it said, “The Last Time is Now.” He thanked all his fans for their support and dedication, and he responded to the complaints raised by the crowd. He explained that his farewell would last all year until WrestleMania 2025.
Near the end of his speech, the audience chanted a thank-you to Cena. He appeared emotional when he thanked them for their kindness.
In a press conference after his retirement announcement, Cena cleared up some confusion about his last match of his career. He said that WrestleMania 2025 will actually not be his final appearance but will kick off his farewell tour. He plans for many dates throughout 2025, with a final match at the end, probably in December 2025. Cena added that, even though he will no longer be competing after his final event, he will still be involved with other possibilities in order to remain a member of the WWE.
He also expressed the finality of his retirement, emphasizing that he would not follow the path of others who retire, only to return for further involvement later. He said that he is physically ready to retire, yet the love of his WWE home and the fans will keep him involved in other ways.
Cena’s career with WWE began in 2001, and during the next 23 years, he won the WWE Championship 13 times. During his career, he also won three heavyweight titles.
