(DailyDig.com) – Clasen Quality Chocolate (CQC) recalled some of their products on May 3 because of a possible contamination of salmonella. On June 18, they updated the recall with additional information.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall risk as a Class II level. The FDA website characterizes a Class II level as a transient risk that could potentially undergo medical reversal when the individual utilizes or encounters the product. The consequences for a person’s health will rarely become serious.
Salmonella is a bacterium that is not rare. As the Cleveland Clinic has stated, over one million individuals in the US develop an infection from it every year.
Most of the infections that people contract are typically mild, although not pleasant. A majority of patients recover quickly, usually within a couple of days. The symptoms present during the infection include headaches, nausea, abdominal cramping, fever, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually present to the patient six hours or up to six days after consumption or exposure to the bacteria. At times, a severe case of diarrhea may lead to some dehydration.
Health-compromised individuals may be at a higher risk. These people may include children under one-year-old, adults aged 65 years or older, or people who have a compromised immune system.
The Clasen company, based in Wisconsin, distributed the potentially contaminated products in nine states: Washington, Utah, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Georgia, and California.
