Cornerback DJ Hayden Killed in Car Crash

(DailyDig.com) – Former cornerback in the NFL, D.J. Hayden, was one of the victims in an early morning vehicle collision in Houston on November 11.

The University of Houston reported that three former football players were killed in the crash: Hayden, Zach McMillian, and Ralph Oragwu.

Before 2 a.m., the Houston Police Department (HPD) received calls to 911 reporting a serious automobile accident involving two cars. A southbound black Acura on Fannin Street had the green light to cross Pierce Street, as a speeding black Chrysler crossed into the intersection by running the red signal and collided with the Acura.

Four individuals, including a pedestrian and the motorist who ran the red light, were declared dead at the scene of the accident, according to Megan Howard, Assistant Chief of the HPD. One of those slain was a homeless male. The casualties were five men and one female. The speeding, red-light-running driver of the automobile and the homeless male were pronounced dead on the spot.

An additional four individuals, Howard said, were sent to area hospitals. Two additional victims were found dead in the hospital, and the condition of one female patient is critical.

A patient, a male, is being questioned by investigators at the hospital.

Hayden, at 33 years old, spent time in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, and Washington Commanders. Before signing with the Oakland Raiders, he excelled as a defensive back for Houston in 2011 and in 2012. McMillian, now 32, was a member of the Cougars’ roster from 2010 until 2013.

The university released a statement saying they were mourning the deaths of three people who had left a lasting impression on the lives of those around them. The distinct legacies of those who played Houston University Football will be remembered for their love of teammates, defiance of adversity, and dedication to community service. Their combined abilities gave Houston Football many of its most remarkable moments.
