(DailyDig.com) – The actor, Jake Lloyd, who portrayed Anakin Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” had entered a mental health unit, according to his mother’s, Lisa Lloyd, announcement on March 11.
Ms. Lloyd stated that her son began to have trouble knowing what reality he was in during high school. She didn’t know how to respond when Lloyd spoke of different realities, according to news reports.
An incident led to his admission to the rehabilitation facility. She was driving with him when he wanted the car turned off. Being in the center lane of a freeway, he turned the car off, causing a traffic jam. When the police arrived, Lloyd was speaking incoherently when the officer questioned him.
They sent him to a hospital, calling what happened a psychotic break. He remained in the hospital for two months, then was released to enter the facility for mental health, according to his mother.
In 2008, Lloyd was given a diagnosis of schizophrenia. His mother noticed some issues from his high school years that increased in college. She stated that she didn’t know that he heard voices during high school, but she was finally told that was happening.
After his schizophrenia diagnosis, she said that he became more depressed than before. A problem with the initial treatment with medication is that Lloyd didn’t believe he had a problem, which led him to not take his medication as prescribed.
In June 2015, Lloyd was involved in a police car chase which ended when he crashed his car. Police arrested him, and he spent ten months in jail. He decided to get psychiatric help after that incident.
Ms. Lloyd told reporters that her son is doing better now, relating to those around him, doctors, staff, and other patients. She is pleased that he seems to have become more social.
After “Star Wars,” Lloyd continued acting in films such as “Jingle All the Way” and “Madison.” Now that he is regularly taking his medication, his mother says he is more like he used to be.
