(DailyDig.com) – The Prime Minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry, agreed on March 12 to resign after weeks of pressure to resign and violence overtaking his nation, seeing the order of law nearly disappear.
From Puerto Rico, where he has been since the violence escalated, he announced that his resignation would take effect once a presidential council for the transition is established. In a video announcement, he expressed his gratitude to all Haitians for the opportunity to lead Haiti. He concluded by asking the people of Haiti to do what they are able to do to allow stability and peace to return soon.
The resignation came after a meeting in Jamaica of the region’s leaders, including Antony Blinken, Secretary of State in the US. They met to discuss what political solutions were available to help with a government transition to end the Haiti crisis.
The current escalation of violence began when armed gangs, led by Jimmy Chérizier, an elite policeman turned gangster, stormed the main prison in Port-au-Prince, releasing nearly 4,000 prisoners. They proceeded to attack the police and burn down their stations. They also attacked the shipping port, airport, and many government buildings as they spread chaos and violence across the capital city.
Many people were killed, and the homeless who are fleeing their neighborhoods as the gangs are raiding their homes and slaughtering them are estimated to be over 15,000. Stores cannot replenish their stock of water and food because the shipping port in the city is closed.
While the leaders of the region were meeting to discuss the future control of Haiti, Chérizier, Haiti’s leader of the violent gangs that waged war against the unelected Henry leadership, stated his disapproval of the outside interference attempting to control their country. He told news reporters that interference with their nation would only cause more chaos for Haiti.
Chérizier added that they have the right to decide on their leader and the type of government they end up with.
