Listeria contaminated foods may not always smell or look spoiled, but the infection could potentially lead to life-threatening infections. Symptoms may manifest at any time up to 2.5 months following exposure.
Infection symptoms may include a severe headache, persistent fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and a stiff neck. A lab test is required to diagnose Listeria infections.
People who are at risk for infections causing life-threatening danger include young children, elderly adults, pregnant women, and those who have compromised immune systems.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria infections cause nearly 1,600 infections every year, with about 260 US deaths per year.
Additionally, Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery announced that other food markets nationwide, such as Whole Foods, Weis Market, Safeway, Roche Brothers, Market Basket, Hannaford, Giant Food, Dave’s Fresh Marketplace, and Big Y, sell their products.
