(DailyDig.com) – On September 28, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California died. At the age of 90, she became the oldest active senator in the United States. She made history as the first female senator from California. Feinstein was set to step down at the conclusion of her term amid mounting concerns about her health and age.
Feinstein was hailed as a pioneer by President Biden. He stated that she was a devoted and caring friend, but she seemed ready for anything.
She was the initial female San Francisco mayor before making her way into national politics. Feinstein became mayor after the 1978 killing of George Moscone, while she was serving on the board of supervisors.
In 1992, Feinstein was elected to the Senate. After 9/11, she led an investigation into CIA torture, and in 1994, she was instrumental in securing a federal ban on assault weapons.
Earlier this year, after being hospitalized for shingles, the senator, who was suffering from health problems, returned to the Senate after an absence of over two months. Despite widespread concerns about her ability to serve as a senator, she refused to step down.
Pursuant to the Congressional Record, she participated in a vote on September 27 at 11:45 a.m. ET while present in the Senate. In the afternoon, though, she failed to cast two additional votes.
Feinstein’s legacy in Washington is secure; she served as a senator for six terms. In November 2022, she made history by being the longest-serving female senator in United States history, and she thought it was a great honor. She also expressed her appreciation to her California constituents for electing her.
On the morning of September 28, her colleagues in the Senate started the day by placing flowers on Feinstein’s desk and paying tribute to her memory.
Officials said that Feinstein will be laid to rest at City Hall in San Francisco on Sunday evening. Her memorial service will be held at the Herbst Theatre at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center on Thursday, October 5.
