Michelle Obama's Mother Passes Away, Aged 86

(DailyDig.com) – Michelle Obama, former first lady, announced on May 31 that Marian Shields Robinson, her mother, died at age 86.

On her and former President Obama’s social media pages, Obama stated that her mother was always available when she needed her. She was her rock and a constant force in her family’s life.

Several family members, including the Obamas, Craig Robinson, and his family, released a statement expressing their love for her and how her presence improved their lives. They stated that Robinson died peacefully, but they will now have to find a way to move on.

Their statement also highlighted her wisdom, which appeared intrinsic yet was genuinely acquired through life’s challenging experiences. She combined her deep understanding of life with grace, speaking the truth that provoked thought.

Robinson was from Chicago’s South Side and came from a family of seven children. In 1960, she wed Fraser Robinson, and had two children, Michelle and Craig. Fraser was also from the South Side of Chicago, with the strength of a boxer and the coolness of a jazz lover. He died in 1991 after suffering from multiple sclerosis.

She had always been involved with her children’s education, as she taught them early how to read. They both stated that she gave them the confidence and strength to succeed in their educational adventures.

Robinson was also involved with her grandchildren throughout their lives, serving as an inspiration, a willing listener, and a loving encouragement to impart her pride in them.

She moved from Chicago to the White House when her son-in-law became president in 2008. She maintained a low profile during the eight years she lived there. She would sometimes attend White House holiday affairs, such as the East Room concerts, and went on a few trips with the Obamas overseas. But much of her time with the first family was spent with the two Obama girls.
