(DailyDig.com) – On July 21, President Biden announced that he would be dropping out of his bid for re-election as President of the United States. In his announcement letter, he stated that he would continue to serve as president until the newly chosen president’s January inauguration.
Biden’s resignation from the campaign has divided many of the senior leaders in the Democrat Party on who should be chosen to take his place and run for the presidency. According to Biden’s post on social media, he endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, as the Democratic Party’s nominee. He wrote that her choice as vice president was his greatest decision, and that she had his full support.
Prior to Biden’s announcement, a source from within the campaign said that both Harris and Biden spoke several times prior to his decision to support her.
Harris released a statement thanking Biden for his exceptional legacy of leadership and how much he had achieved during his presidency. She is honored to receive his support, and she plans to win the nomination and unite their party and the nation.
Former President Obama has not endorsed Harris, stating that the Democrats will be the ones to make their choice known. He stated that the selection of Biden’s replacement as the candidate would follow an open process.
Obama continued by saying that this will be a new obstacle to navigate as they work with the party’s leadership over the next few days. He stated that he is confident that a process will be in place to choose an outstanding nominee for the presidency.
The former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, also has not endorsed Harris to replace Biden and agrees with Obama that the open process will allow Democrats to make their choice.
One major issue that some Democrat leaders are concerned about is Harris’ ability to beat former President Trump in the November election. With the fact that Obama, who is highly respected among Democrats, has not endorsed Harris, the Democrat leadership believes that her candidacy would be damaged without it.
