Assassination Attempt Sparks National Outcry
On September 15, 2024, an assassination attempt on Donald Trump occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. Ryan Wesley Routh, the assailant, was quickly apprehended by local authorities within minutes. This incident has highlighted the pressing need for transparency and accountability in the political realm. The attack caught many by surprise, despite Routh’s background of criminal conduct and reckless behavior, as characterized by former coworker Tina Cooper.
The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, led by Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), released a statement addressing the attempted assassination. The statement condemned political violence and emphasized the necessity of preventing such events. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is scheduled to appear before the Committee on July 22 to address security failures and provide necessary transparency and accountability.
This recent event follows an earlier assassination attempt on Trump during a political rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. During the rally, a 20-year-old assailant opened fire, leading Trump to drop behind the podium. Despite being injured, Trump raised a fist in defiance as blood streamed from his right ear. A rally-goer died protecting his family, and two other attendees were wounded. This attack also prompted a congressional investigation into security failures led by Senator Chuck Grassley.
Like everyone tonight, I am shaken by the assassination attempt on President Trump, for him and for our country. Our prayers for the family of the Trump supporter who was killed and anyone injured.

Calls for Accountability and Transparency
House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin stated, “On Saturday, our nation witnessed a grave assault on our democracy when a gunman attempted to assassinate former President Trump, killed an innocent victim, and harmed others. There is no place for political violence of any kind in our great country. Americans have many serious questions about the historic security failures that occurred at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle must appear before the House Oversight Committee without delay on Monday, July 22 to answer our many questions and provide the transparency and accountability that Americans deserve and that are at the foundation of our government.”
“Like many Americans, I was watching former President Trump’s political rally in Pennsylvania on television in real time,” said Senator Chuck Grassley. Grassley has requested records and responses from the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Justice Department to get to the bottom of the security failures. The Secret Service faced criticism for failing to prevent both assassination attempts on Trump.
Political Climate and Public Reaction
The incident has heightened tensions in the presidential contest between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Both have condemned the violence and praised the efforts of law enforcement. The Secret Service’s ability and preparedness are under intense scrutiny, especially after the July assassination attempt.
“The hand of God protected President Trump,” a supporter said, reflecting the sentiments of many loyalists. Supporters and detractors alike are grappling with the larger implications of these attacks. As President Biden calls for a less adversarial campaign tone, the use of images from the July 13th incident has already gone viral and is being used for fundraising.
