States Issued Warning After Salad Recalled

(DailyDig.com) – Heinen’s, located in Warrensville Heights, Ohio, announced a voluntary recall on the FDA website on June 14, warning customers in two states. Some of Heinen’s prepackaged Tuscan Salad Bowls contain a product not declared in the ingredient list.

Heinen’s retail stores in Illinois and Ohio received the salad bowl product. Each package’s weight determines the price of the Tuscan Salad Bowls.

The ingredient list does not include pecans, or possibly tree nuts, which may cause an allergic reaction in those who have a sensitivity to nuts that could become severe, if not fatal. The salads were distributed to only the two states listed. The recalled packages all have “2-08888- 40849-3” listed as the UPC code, with 6-2-24 as the only sell-by date that has the faulty ingredient list.

No one reported any adverse reactions after eating the salads, but the recall announcement advised people with pecan or tree nut sensitivities to refrain from eating the product. Heinen’s announcement states that people should throw the product away by wrapping it in two bags and then placing it in the trash with a lid that fits tightly. Customers may also return it to the store where it was purchased to receive a full refund.

Heinen’s originally made the announcement of the recall on May 30, but the FDA was not informed until June 14. The reason for not informing the FDA about the recall until 12 days after the sell-by date remains unclear.

For the health of most customers who purchased the prepackaged salad, there may not be an issue with the additional pecans or tree nuts. However, for the consumer who has a sensitivity to nuts, a potential reaction could be a fatal anaphylaxis condition.

If any customer requires additional information, or they have any questions regarding the recall, they may call Heinen’s directly at 1-855-475-2300, ext. 2337. Customers may also email the company at [email protected].
